Which skin type is best?

Different individual has different skin type, and they are based on their genes, race, geography, and other medicinal conditions. There is no best skin type, as everything has its own advantage and disadvantage. But if we need to mention what is the best skin type, then we can say is a combination skin type. As it adopts various external factors and can sustain them too. 

Types of skin tone

There are five basic types of healthy skin that are normal skin, dry skin, oily skin, combination skin, and sensitive skin. As skin type is determined by genetics, the condition of our skin varies according to the various internal and external environmental factors affected by hormonal, climatic, or dietary changes. Every skin type is different and has its own characteristics.

1. Normal skin

Normal skin is neither too oily nor too dry and It has balanced sebum production and good blood circulation. Hence it is referred to as well-balanced skin. Normal skin is healthy and well hydrated and makes sebum hydrate the skin. Normal skin varies from person to person and is healthy skin. ‘Normal’ is a term widely used to refer to well-balanced skin and hence it is termed as endemic. Normal skin has a soft and smooth texture. Normal skin is usually healthy and radiant skin. Normal skin has fine pores, good circulation, and has no blemishes, and is not sensitive.

2. Oily skin

Oily skin is prone to acne breakouts and appears greasy due to excess sebum production. Oily skin is described as a skin type with highlighted sebum having a glossy shine and visible pores and the overproduction of sebum is known as seborrhea. A number of issues that prompt the overproduction of sebum are hormonal changes, medications, stress, genetics, hormonal imbalances, and cosmetics. 

Oily skin is generally characterized by large and clearly visible pores with acne production. Oily skin appears glossy shine and is more prone to blackheads and whiteheads appearance and forms acne. Oily skin type people get troubled with acne on almost most of their body parts that are recurrently on the neck,  shoulders, back, and chest. Oily skin has more active oil glands that produce sebum. They secrete more oil than usual even when applied with any product.

3. Dry Skin

Dry skin is covered with a layer of all dead skin cells. It is determined by flaky and rough texture and at times causes skin irritation and also makes it look dull. As it produces less sebum as unable to retain moisture in the skin. Dry skin appears dull and lifeless. Sun exposures, hot showers, and over-exfoliation are the elements that lead to dry skin. The important thing with dry skin people is to keep their skin hydrated, as hydration will make them look younger, plumper, and radiant. Dry skin is indicated by the feeling of tightness and rough skin. Elder people have more wrinkles and lines with dry skin. Many internal and external factors affect the ability of skin hydration. Dry skin feels tight, brittle, and looks dull.

Dry skin may vary from person to person. It can be from dry skin to very dry skin. If dry skin is not moisturized it can become drier flaky, and rough, and cause possible itching and cause more irritation, and redness. Dry skin develops more risk of infection. Extremely dry causes chapping, frequent itching, and roughness of the skin as cracked heels. Skin appears dry due to genetics, long showers, age, etc, this factor affects skin dryness. 

4. Combination skin

As a word defines, combination skin is a mixture of oily skin and dry skin. In combination skin, the T-zone is oily and the cheeks are dry. Combination skin can be identified by the oily T-zone that is the forehead, nose, chin, and dry cheeks. The skin is sensitive to sun damage whereas the skin becomes oilier than other skin types when you step out in sunlight. Combination skin appears shiny, the pores appear large and open, and breakouts occur on oily areas of the face. To get relief from combination skin, you need to incorporate some good skincare routines like using foaming cleansers, exfoliation, and wearing sunscreen.

5. Sensitive skin

Sensitive skin reacts more than normal skin and gets easily irritated with any products or environmental factors is referred to as sensitive skin. Sensitive skin is vulnerable to heat, redness gets dry in winter, skin feels itchy and tight, becomes oily in summer, and has an uneven texture. Sensitive skin becomes red after a hot shower.

Always have a patch test before using any product when you have sensitive skin. Avoid using many products on your face when you have sensitive skin. Never do too much of a skincare routine and use harsh products on your face. Sensitive skin is more prone to inflammation. 

How to know your skin type?

There are several ways to determine your skin type. Here are some of the most common methods:

1. The blotting paper test: 

Wash your face and wait for about an hour. Then, press a blotting paper onto different areas of your face. If the paper picks up oil from all areas, you have oily skin. If it picks up oil only from your T-zone (forehead, nose, and chin), you have combination skin. If there is no oil, your skin is dry.

2. Visual inspection:

Look at your skin in the mirror. If it looks shiny and has visible pores, you have oily skin. If it looks tight and has a matte finish, you have dry skin. If it looks shiny only in the T-zone area, you have combination skin.

No matter what the skin type is, following some skincare routine can protect the health of your skin and makes the skin give it a natural glowing look.

  • Always keep yourself hydrated
  • Apply sunscreen whenever stepping out in direct sunlight.
  • Always wear protective clothing and sunglasses when coming in direct sunlight.
  • Always moisturize your skin and wash your skin regularly with a suitable cleanser as per your skin type 
  • Always drink 7 to 8 ounces of water to keep yourself hydrated.
  • Have a healthy diet and start eating leafy vegetables and fruits.
