Ingredients that are found in anti-acne products

Benzoyl peroxide

Benzoyl peroxide kills the acne-causing bacteria and is an over the counter topical medicated cream that reduces acne on the skin. Using benzoyl peroxide helps in decreasing the number of blackheads and whiteheads and pimples also reduces the further breakouts of acne. Face cleansers that contain benzoyl peroxide can be used twice a day on the face regularly. A higher concentration of benzoyl peroxide must be avoided as it may cause drying of the skin. Instead, use a lower concentration of these ingredients to prevent acne breakout. A higher concentration of this ingredient can be used on other body parts except for the face,  as the face is the most sensitive part of the body. It takes a week to complete the treatment and improve the acne.

Salicylic acid

Salicylic acid, also known as beta hydroxy acid, removes the dead skin cells by deeply penetrating the pores and thereby unclogging the pores of the face. Salicylic acid also helps to reduce blackheads formation and prevents its size from increasing by decreasing the excess oil secretions. Salicylic acid is very effective and safe in treating acne and acne vulgaris. This ingredient can be used in cleanser, gel, or cream form and can be used twice a day. Unlike benzoyl peroxide, it is not necessary that salicylic acid will be more effective when used in higher concentrations. You can see the observed results after using salicylic acid within one to two weeks.

Alpha-hydroxy acids

Alpha-hydroxy acids of AHAs are the class of chemical exfoliants. These AHAs removes dead skin cells and prevents excess sebum production reducing bacterial growth. The three different types of AHAs are lactic acid, mandelic acid and glycolic acid. AHAs helps remove dead skin cells and reduce the production of excess sebum thus helping in unclogging the pores and further reducing the breakouts.

AHAs may be used at both low and high concentrations once daily, recommended by dermatologists. When using AHAs for the first time you may experience some tingling sensation, itchiness and dryness on the skin. If the symptoms like dryness, redness and itchiness persist discontinue the use of AHAs and consult the dermatologists or you can use AHAs every other day or alternate days. You must avoid using AHAs in sunscreen as it makes your skin more sensitive to UV light and radiation. A higher concentration of AHAs can be used in peels and masks but should be used with extra care as it can cause dryness to the skin.

Retinol

Retinoid comes under the group of retinoids which is also known as vitamin A derivative that helps increase the skin cell turnover rate by removing the dead skin cells and boosting the collagen level in the body and producing new healthy skin cells. Retinol is beneficial for reducing blackheads and whiteheads that frequently occur on the face and removes the overall texture of the skin and provides an even tone to the skin. Retinol helps in treating every type of acne breakout on the face and body. When using retinol for the first time always start with a lower concentration and apply every alternate day as they may cause redness, itchiness and dryness on the skin.

Applying retinol on wet skin may cause skin irritation so it is always recommended to use retinol on dry skin at night time and also apply moisturizer to overcome the dryness on the skin that may occur after the application of retinol. Avoid retinol use when a woman is pregnant. The effectiveness of the retinol is seen after application for 6 weeks.

Tea tree oil

Tea tree oil has anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial properties on the skin and helps in the reduction of acne on the skin. Tea tree oil should not be applied directly to the skin and must be used with other carrier oils or must be used in face wash, cleanser as that may cause skin irritation or skin rash.

Sulfur

Sulfur helps in the reduction of both blackheads and whiteheads as it removes the upper layer of the skin that clogs the pore of the skin. Applying sulfur may reduce acne breakouts and also reduce its size. Sulfur works as a spot treatment and can be used on sensitive skin and the appearance of pimples reduces in just a few days. Hence sulfur is very effective for use on the skin.
